Replacing a Micrologix whit a Unistream

I want to replace a Micrologix  1500 whit a Unistream, but it there is a huge amount of IO cards.  May I somehow use the 1764 family I/O expansion rack whit the Unistream? Could I use the Micrologix 1500 as a Slave for this?

If you have a good understanding of Modbus mapping it looks like you can set up the MicroLogix as a slave over one of its serial ports.  I found this on the web.
