Problem with 9.8.80 file open

Just recently I started having a problem with VisiLogic version 9.8.80 on my Windows 7 desktop. Every time I open a file, the file opens then VisiLogic immediately freezes. I have to open Task Manager to kill the program, then when I restart VisiLogic it goes through the standard "VisiLogic was not shut down properly. Press OK to recover." Then VisiLogic opens the program and all is well until the next time I open a file and I have to go through the same process.

I am very experienced with VisiLogic (> 12 years) and know all the ins and outs. The program was installed and run "as administrator". I have uninstalled and reinstalled VisiLogic to no avail. I have installations of multiple other versions of VisiLogic that I access with Version Swapper and none of the others have a problem, only 9.8.80. Further, 9.8.80 works fine on my Win10 laptop. I also keep known working versions of each VisiLogic version installation on another drive (as you can tell I have encountered a lot of headaches with VisiLogic) and these previously untouched installations do not work either.

I'm sure Microsoft has hosed up my Win7 desktop with some update that has caused this, but I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem or if anyone with some in-depth understanding of the file open process that might have a clue where to begin troubleshooting the problem. Maybe the problem will go away with the next Microsoft update, but as of now this is a real pain, plus it prevents me from copy/paste from one project to another since the file kill from task manager also kills the copy/paste buffer.

Any thoughts?

As well as Visco's help, is Windoze updates showing any recent installs through "view windows updates" under 7's Programs and Features?  If so, selective uninstall until culprit possibly found?

Have you tried going back on a restore point to see if it helps?

cheers, Aus

@Saragani

On an unrelated related note, I have determined that version 9.8.80 causes the dreaded Explorer looping problem.  If I edit a file in 9.8.80, save it, and the attach the .vlp file to a post on the forum using the Windows File Open dialog, it totally screws up my computer by causing explorer.exe to continually restart.  The instance of explorer.exe that controls the Desktop won't keep running.

I have to open Regedit from the Task Manager and delete all three instances of vlp_auto_file to get it to come back.

I have not verified this with versions newer than 9.8.80, but I can reproduce it.

I have had that happen on two different Win10 laptops, once while I was out of town on a business trip. Without my computer my resources for solving the problem were more limited. Do we understand the exact sequence that causes this and why?
